Workers of closed Denis Knitwear garment factory in Gazipur continued their sit-in programme for the sixth consecutive day on Friday to press home their demands, including reopening the factory.

The workers held a protest rally in front of the national press club, where their leader of the factory Lucky Akter chaired.

The owners of the factory had closed down the factory before the Eid-ul-Fitr, without paying wages and service benefits of the workers.

The factory directorate authority on April 25 held a tripartite meeting to resolve the crisis. Then, the authority on May 5 convened a meeting, where the representative of the owners did not attend.

General secretary of Bangladesh Garment and Sweaters Sramik Trade Union Centre KM Ruhul Amin said that the workers of the factory would continue their sit-in programme until the factory was open.

‘The workers will hold a solidarity rally in front of the national press club Saturday morning,’ he announced.

Joint general secretary of trade union centre Abul Kalam Azad, office secretary Shahida Parveen and others spoke at the rally.

The rally was followed by a protest rally that paraded different city roads.
