The chief justice Obaidul Hassan said on Tuesday said that bureaucrats were dominating the National Human Rights Commission and the National Legal Aid Services Organisation, instead of the judicial officers.
‘We established the National Human Rights Commission headed by a former High Court judge. But what do you notice today?’ the chief justice said while addressing a discussion organised by the Supreme Court chapter of the NLASO to mark National Legal Aid Day. Â
The chief justice also said that bureaucrats were dominant in the NLASO in the similar manner, as most of its members except the law minister are secretaries to different ministries of the government.
He said that the chief justice did not have any role to play in the national legal aid service organisation. Â
He said that during his recent visit to India, he found that the chief justice of India was the main patron of the neighbouring country’s National Legal Service Authority.Â
‘I request the government to think about the matter more in the future if you want to provide legal aid services to the poor people,’ the chief justice said.
India increased its judiciary budget, he said.
The chief justice said that there had been only Tk 10-12 lakh budget for the Supreme Court legal aid service organisation.
The chief justice said that the government did not provide any honorarium to the SC unit legal committee’s chairman, a High Court judge.
He also said that there were anomalies in the law which remained silent if the chairman of the SC unit legal aid committee would be accountable to the chief justice or the government.
