At least one person was killed and several injured in clashes during the polling of the second phase of the ongoing upazila parishad elections held on Tuesday amid low voter turnout in the local government elections.

In many places, election officials allegedly showed inaction despite open vote rigging, while candidates boycotted the polls in the middle of voting in many other places among the 156 upazilas where voting was held.

Speaking to reporters at his office, chief election commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal said that more than 30 per cent of votes were cast in Tuesday’s elections.

The voter turnout in the first phase of upazila parishad elections in 139 upazilas on May 8 was 36.1 per cent, the lowest in decades.

Election commissioner Md Alamgir said that no rules or regulations in national or local government polls stipulate a certain percentage of votes cast for them to become acceptable.

‘The commission isn›t bothered about the turnout. The Election Commission will be satisfied with any percentage of votes,’ he said.

The voter turnout was 40.22 per cent in 2019, 61 per cent in 2014 and 68.32 per cent in 2009.
