Teachers of different public universities on Sunday called for the cancellation of the universal pension scheme notification for them, terming it as discriminatory.

If no action is taken by May 28, all public university teachers would go for two-hour work abstention on the same day, they said.

They also said that if no action was taken by June 3, they would observe half-day work abstention on June 4.

Teachers of Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Rajshahi University and Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology formed human chains in their universities in the morning with the demand.

The demands are withdrawal of the universal pension scheme, continuation of the previous pension scheme and introduction of a separate salary structure for the teachers with professional benefits.

Earlier on March 13, the Ministry of Finance in a notification said that all officers and employees who joined the service of all autonomous, self-governing, nationalised, statutory or similar organisations and their subordinate institutions on or after July 1, 2024, would be brought under the universal pension scheme.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Dhaka University reported that leaders of the Dhaka University Teachers’ Association formed a human chain in front of Aparajeyo Bangla.

The association leaders alleged that the March 13 notice was discriminatory.

They announced that if no action was taken by May 28, all the public university teachers would observe work abstention from 10:00am to 12 noon on the day, and they would observe half-day work abstention on June 4.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Rajshahi reported that teachers of Rajshahi University formed a human chain in front of the university’s Shahid Tajuddin Ahmad Senate Building.

The teachers alleged that it was unacceptable that government employees would be given maximum benefits while others would face discrimination.

They also said that they would go for work abstention on May 28 and June 4.

The teachers of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology also formed a human chain in front of the university main entrance with the same demands.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Jahangirnagar University reported that leaders of the Jahangirnagar University Teachers’ Association formed a human chain on the road adjacent to the university Central Shaheed Minar.

Speakers at the human chain termed the government initiative as ‘discriminatory’ and a way to make all teachers loyal to the government.

They also warned of boycotting all classes and examinations if their demands are not met.

For the first time in its history, Bangladesh on August 17, 2023, entered the era of a much-hyped uniform pension scheme for the entire population of the country aged above 18, who will start enjoying lifetime pension facilities upon turning 60 years of age.
