Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan on Monday said that no other countries in the history of the world had witnessed such genocide in such a short span of time as Bangladesh saw in 1971.
It is high time to seek recognition of the 1971 genocide, he said while addressing as chief guest at a workshop titled International Recognition of the 1971 Bangladesh Genocide held at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building of the Dhaka University.
Obaidul Hassan further said that in order to get the international recognition, the images of the genocide that took place in different parts of the country should be presented to the world.
Dhaka University vice-chancellor Professor ASM Maksud Kamal presided over the event.
The horrific genocide must be internationally recognised. To this end, a comprehensive database will be created with full information through a project funded by the British Academy, said Maksud Kamal.
The database will be made open to the world so that everyone can know about the genocide committed by the Pakistani occupation forces in the name of ‘Operation Searchlight’, he added.
The workshop, a joint initiative of Dhaka University, University College London and the Centre for Genocide Studies, was also addressed by Professor Sheikh Hafizur Rahman , director of the Centre for Genocide Studies, and associate professor at the UCL Bayes Ahmed.
