The education ministry on Saturday warned against a rumour about a new schedule of this year’s Higher Secondary Certificate examinations.

As per an earlier decision, the examinations would start from June 30 across Bangladesh, said a press release issued by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka on the day.

The confusion arose as a notice surfaced on different social media pages on May 30, signed by the Dhaka board controller of examinations professor, Md Abul Bashar.

As per the notice, due to the cyclone, flood and two times students’ countrywide protest, the HSC exams will be held on July 30 on shortened syllabuses instead of June 30.

The new routine will be published soon, it added.

Earlier on April 2, the Dhaka board published the routine of the HSC exams for nine general boards — Dhaka, Rajshahi, Jashore, Cumilla, Chattogram, Barishal, Sylhet, Dinajpur and Mymensingh.

According to the routine, the theoretical part of the examinations will be held between June 30 and August 11 and the practical part of the examinations will be held between August 12 and August 21.

The Bangladesh Madrassah Education Board and the Bangladesh Technical Education Board also published routines for the alim and vocational examinations respectively which will start from June 30.

After the notice on changed date of HSC exams surfaced on Friday, the education ministry said in a press release that the notice was fake and the exams would be held following previous routine as no decision was made to defer the exams.

Following this, on Saturday the Dhaka board issued an urgent release signed by the board controller of examinations professor Md Abul Bashar.

It read that the notice on changed date of the HSC exams was not issued by the Dhaka board and the exams would start from June 30 as per the earlier routine.

All are requested not to be alarmed about any propaganda like this, it added.

Like the pre-Covid-19 pandemic period, this year the examinations will be held on all subjects and for three hours.

According to the routine, the morning examinations will start at 10:00am and the afternoon examinations will start at 2:00pm.

The syllabus, however, will be shortened.

Usually, every year the HSC and equivalent exams start in the first week of April.

In 2020, Secondary School Certificate and equivalent examinations were held as usual while the HSC and equivalent examinees were awarded grade points using the subject-mapping method.

For the pandemic, in 2023, 2022 and 2021 the HSC examinations took place in August, in November and in December respectively.
