Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Habibur Rahman announced on Friday that traders, selling sacrificial animals in undesignated places, would face arrest, and their cattle would be seized.
‘Previously, people set up small cattle markets in any available open space. We have instructed police officials to take stern action against them,’ said Habibur at a media briefing in the capital.
Regarding the expansion of makeshift cattle markets onto roads, Habibur said that they held meetings with leaseholders in the city. They assured police that they would not expand beyond designated areas.
‘Traders, who will violate the rule, will face strict consequences’, he warned.
The DMP commissioner also mentioned that coordination teams of police would be deployed at each cattle market in the city. The makeshift markets would be open from June 13 to the day of Eid-ul-Azha.
‘Police and detective branches will be deployed in cattle markets. CCTV installations and awareness announcements for consumers and sellers will also be in place,’ he added.
A total of 18 cattle markets, including 16 makeshifts, began operations on Sunday under the Dhaka South City Corporation and the Dhaka North City Corporation for the five-day official trade of sacrificial animals for Eid-ul-Azha, one of the biggest religious festivals for Muslims.
The North City Corporation has leased six makeshift cattle markets, while the South has 10. The permanent markets are North’s Gabtoli and South’s Sarulia.
