The police registered a murder case two days after the death of Masud Rana, who was killed in the early hours on Thursday, in a clash between supporters of two defeated upazila vice-chairman candidates in Kamarkhanda upazila elections.
Kamarkhanda police station inspector (investigation) Sajjadur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the case was registered Friday night on the order of the superintendent of police in Sirajganj.
It took late night to register the names of 13 accused as the central server of the police was down amid frequent power outages, he said.
The deceased, Masud Rana, 45, a resident of Roydaulatpur village in Kamarkhanda upazila, was a mathematics teacher at BUK High School and a photojournalist for Somoyer Alo.
The defeated vice-chairman candidates – Selim Reza and Hafizur Rahman – hold posts in the ruling Awami League and its associate body. Selim Reza is the AL Kamarkhanda upazila unit assistant general secretary, while Hafizur Rahman is a member of the Bangladesh Krishak League Kamarkhanda upazila unit.
According to the victim’s family, Masud was allegedly attacked by Hafizur Rahman’s follower Lutfor Rahman for supporting Selim Raza in the upazila elections.
He died at about 12:15am on Thursday after being taken to the emergency unit of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital.
The victim’s wife reportedly stayed the whole day at the Kamarkhanda police station on Friday to register the case, alleging that police were reluctant to take the case as most of the accused were influential in the area.
The Kamarkhanda upazila elections were held on June 5.
