Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar camps expressed concerns on Thursday that the ongoing armed conflict in Myanmar could further delay their repatriation process.

Residents of the Kutupalang camp in Ukhia shared their fears during a discussion meeting, organised in observance of World Refugee Day, globally recognised on June 20.

Habibur Rahman, assistant camp-in-charge, attended the event as the chief guest. The programme also featured Rohingya community leader Majed Abdullah and representatives from various non-governmental organisations.

Habibur Rahman reiterated the government’s desire for the Rohingyas to return to their homeland in Myanmar. He mentioned that delegations from Myanmar had visited Bangladesh several times to verify Rohingyas identities as part of the repatriation process. Additionally, a delegation from Bangladesh also visited the designated relocation site for Rohingyas in Myanmar.

‘The government aims to resolve the internal conflicts of Myanmar quickly and facilitate the Rohingyas’ return,’ he added.

Rohingya residents expressed their dissatisfaction with the camp conditions, likening it to prison life, and emphasised their desire to return to Myanmar.

They called on the United Nations to resolve Myanmar’s conflict and create a conducive environment for their repatriation, fearing that the ongoing armed conflict may halt the process.

Hundreds of Rohingya people also participated in a rally with banners to mark the day, as Bangladesh hosted over 1.2 million Rohingyas from Myanmar’s Rakhine state.

Despite several attempts following the 2017 mass exodus of Rohingyas from Myanmar, Bangladesh has not been able to repatriate a single Rohingya.
