
An activist of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party was hacked to death allegedly by a group of assailants clad in burqa in the Islampur area under Sonagazi upazila in Feni Tuesday morning.
The deceased, Abul Hashem, 48, of Char Darbesh village under the upazila, was a close associate of the upazila BNP’s former president Gias Uddin.
Sonagazi model police station officer-in-charge Bayezid Akon said that the police detained Md Rasel, 35, in connection with the murder.
He, referring to their initial investigation, said that Hashem was killed due to previous enmity.
‘We are trying to arrest the perpetrators involved in the killing. Filing a case regarding the incident was under process,’ he said.
The police and eyewitnesses said that Hashem was on his way to his village home by a motorcycle from his rented house in the upazila town Tuesday morning.
When he reached the Islampur area of ​​Char Darbesh Union, a group of people clad in burqa stopped his motorcycle, they said.
Several other people from the side of the road, armed with sharp weapons, attacked the victim and hacked him indiscriminately before leaving the place.
The local people rescued him and rushed him to Sonagazi Upazila Health Complex from where he was shifted to Feni General Hospital and the doctors there then referred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment, the police said.
OC Bayezid said that Hashem died in Cumilla while he was on the way to Dhaka.
