A video clip of beating a rickshaw puller by an assistant sub-inspector of the police went viral on social media on Saturday, drawing huge criticism.
In the clip, ASI Abdus Selim of the Singra police station in Natore was seen beating the rickshaw puller with a torch.
Victim rickshaw puller Harun Ali told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that three police members stopped him near upazila court ground while he was heading towards the Singra bus stand to repair his battery-run rickshaw as it went bad on Thursday midnight.
‘The trio police members got into my rickshaw and asked me to take them to the police station. When I informed them that one of the wires in my rickshaw’s meter snapped, and I was going to Singra bus stand to get it repaired, the ASI started beating me,’ he alleged.
He said that the police members then forced him to pull the rickshaw to the Singra bus stand.
In the video clip, ASI Selim Reza was heard saying to the rickshaw puller, ‘I’m telling you to take us there. If you don’t, I’m going to rip your ears off.’
Abdus Selim, however, denied the allegation of the beating and claimed that he just rebuked the rickshaw puller as he was dilly-dallying giving an excuse for his rickshaw going bad.
Contacted, Tariqul Islam, superintendent of Natore district police, said that they were investigating the allegation and took necessary action as required.
