The body of a student of Begum Badrunnesa Govt Girls’ College was found hanging from the ceiling fan on the third floor of a house at Golapbagh Police Quarter at Jatrabari in the capital on Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Jhumur Akter, 22, a second-year student of the college, from Bhanikatra village under Ghatail upazila in Tangail.
Jhumur’s sister Nupur Akter claimed that they found her hanging from the ceiling fan at about 9:30am, brought her down and took her to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
‘The duty doctor pronounced her dead at about 11:30am. None of our family members were present when the incident took place. We are not sure whether it was an accident or not,’ said Nupur.
Jatrabari police station officer-in-charge Abul Hasan said that Jhumur’s body was kept at the DMCH mortuary for autopsy.
‘Jhumur was living in the quarter of her sister, who is a member of the police. We cannot confirm whether it was suicide or murder at this moment,’ the OC added.
The OC also said that the victim’s family had yet to file any case over the death of Jhumur Akter.
