A union parishad chairman was shot to death in Gutudia area under Dumuria upazila in Khulna district Saturday night.
The deceased is Sheikh Rabiul Islam Rabi, 42, the chairman of Sharafpur Union Parishad under the upazila. He was a member of the upazila unit of Awami League.
Police and locals said Rabi came under attack by a group of unidentified assailants at about 10:00pm at WAPDA intersection of Gutudia area when he was on way to his Khulna city home from the upazila town by a motorcycle after attending a meeting of his party at the upazila headquarters.
They said that, after receiving bullets, Rabi fell on the road and locals rescued him and rushed him to Dumuria Health Complex from where he was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead at about 11:45pm.
Dumuria police station officer-in-charge Sukanta Kumar Saha said that Rabi was shot to death by a group of miscreants and his body was kept at KMCH morgue for post mortem examination.
Rabi, also a former leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League, was elected chairman in 2016 and 2021 as an Awami League鈥檚 rebel candidate.
