The High Court on Sunday directed the inspector general of police to report to the court the whereabouts of missing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader Atikur Rahman Rassel.

Atikur, 36, vice-president of Dhaka College unit Chhatra Dal, went missing on July 1 from Jagannath Saha Road at Lalbagh in the capital.

The court also asked the home secretary, IGP, Rapid Action Battalion director general, Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner, deputy commissioner of police at Lalbagh Zone and Lalbagh police officer-in-charge to explain in four weeks why they would not be asked to produce Atik before it to its satisfaction that he was not detained illegally.

The bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolan issued the rule after hearing a writ petition filed by Atik’s father Abul Hossain Sardar.

Atik’s lawyer Kayser Kamal told the court that his client, an active participant of all movements, had been detained illegally by the police or RAB at unknown locations since July 1.

He said that no case was pending against Atik, who had remained traceless since July 1.

‘If respondents are not directed to immediately produce Atik before the court, he may be subjected to torture or extra judicial killing,’ he argued.
