
Communications across Bangladesh suffered heavy disruptions for the second day in a row on Friday with the capital virtually cut off from the rest of the country.
On Friday, no trains and inter-district buses operated anywhere in the country, while no city-service buses ran inside the capital and launch services on Dhaka-Chandpur route were also shut.
Some schedules of international flights were also disrupted on the day.Â
From today a ban on the movement of motorcycles has been imposed, while metro rail services in the capital have also been suspended for an indefinite period.
On Friday, the country saw the second running day of the ‘complete shutdown’ enforced by the students waging a movement for reform in quota system in public services.
At least 80 people were killed and hundreds injured (till Friday 8:00pm) as the police and ruling party supporters clashed with students across the country in the past several days.
No city service buses ran in the capital, nor did any long-route buses leave any of the three inter-district bus terminals at Mohakhali, Gabtoli and Saidabad on Friday for the second consecutive day, said Dhaka Road Transport Owners’ Association executive president Md Abul Kalam.
Kalam, also Mohakhali terminal bus owners’ association president, said that since Thursday the owners stopped plying their buses fearing vandalism.
‘The number of passengers is also very low,’ he said, adding that regular services would be restored once the situation became normal.Â
Rail communications between Dhaka and the rest of Bangladesh snapped since around 12:00 noon on Thursday till filing of this report at 8:00pm on Friday.
On Thursday noon, the students blocked the rail tracks at Mohakhali in the capital, leading to the shutdown of rail communication.
A senior official at the Bangladesh Railway Dhaka divisional office told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Friday that train services across the country stopped since Thursday noon.
He could not say when the services would resume.
Dhaka rail station police officer-in-charge under the Government Railway Police Ferdous Ahmed Biswas said that no trains were able to enter Dhaka since Thursday noon.
The trains stranded at different places due to the blockade in Dhaka were sent back to the places they came from, he said.
Narsingdi railway outpost in-charge sub-inspector Md Shahidullah said that on Thursday night some miscreants vandalised and tried to set fire to the Karnaphuli commuter train on the Dhaka-Chattogram route in Bashail rail gate area.
No one was injured and no one was arrested, he added.
Though launch owners said that they had stopped launch services on Dhaka-Chandpur route from Friday, officials of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority said that some launches were plying on the route.
Bangladesh Inland Waterways Passenger Carrier Association vice-chairman Badiuzzaman Badal said that they stopped launch services on Dhaka-Chandpur route from Friday due to passenger shortages.
BIWTA joint director Alamgir Kabir, posted at the Sadarghat launch terminal, said that launches from Dhaka to Chandpur ran on Friday, but launches were not coming from Chandpur to Dhaka.
Other launch services on other routes were normal, he added.
BIWTA deputy general manager (Aricha ghat) Shah Khaled Newaz said that ferry services in Aricha area was normal, but the number of passengers and vehicles was few.Â
Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport executive director M Kamrul Islam confirmed ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that some international flights, including Emirates, were cancelled, or diverted on Friday, while other flights were usual.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police additional commissioner (traffic) Md Munibur Rahman confirmed ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that movement of motorcycles inside the Dhaka metropolitan city was banned from today until further notice.
In a message, sent to the media on Friday, the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited said that the metro rail services would be closed from today until further notice considering the public safety.
