
The police on Wednesday arrested two female prisoners who were among 826 inmates of Narsingdi district jail who broke free on Friday, increasing the number of the arrested to 97.
The arrested are Israt Jahan Mou and Khadiza Akhter Meghla.
The two are allegedly members of the banned extremist group Ansar al-Islam.
One hundred fifty-six prisoners, meanwhile, surrendered to court on the day totalling the number to 292 since July 22.
Confirming the matter, Narsingdi Lawyers Association president Kazi Nazmul Islam said that affidavits of the surrendered prisoners had been signed.
Earlier, 10 prisoners surrendered on Monday, while 126 prisoners surrendered on Tuesday.
The jailbreak occurred at about 4:00pm on July 19 amidst chaotic demonstrations outside the jail, located along the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.
Protesters set government offices ablaze, blocked the highway, and confined local ruling Awami League leaders to their residences.
The inmates set fire to the jail before breaking through the main entrance and escaping in large numbers.
