More people and transports were seen on roads in the capital Dhaka on Friday during curfew hours despite the government increased relaxed period for nine hours from 8:00am to 5:00pm on Friday and Saturday.

In the city, many vehicles, including cars, CNG-run auto-rickshaws and intercity buses were seen plying the roads during the curfew hours on the seventh day.


The government imposed  the curfew and deployed military midnight past July 19 amid violence over student protest for reforming quotas in government jobs. 

Two more critically injured people died on Friday while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, taking the death toll from the recent violence during student protests to at least 211 across the country.

The two victims, Imtiaz Ahmed Zabir, 23, and Main Uddin, 25, were admitted to the DMCH after they were hit by bullets in violence during the countrywide student movement for the quota reform in government jobs.

After holding a meeting with law enforcement agencies on Thursday night, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan told reporters that the ongoing curfew hours would have a break for Dhaka and its adjoining districts Gazipur, Narayanganj and Narsigndi districts.

At Sadarghat Launch Terminal, a total of 32 launches arrived in Dhaka and 44 launches left Dhaka for other districts from 8:00am to 7:00pm on Friday, according to Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority officials.

Asked why they are allowing launches during curfew hours, BIWTA joint director Alamgir Kabir said that they allowed launches to depart and arrive due to huge pressure of passengers.

‘We have allowed launches considering the public sufferings,’ he added.

During the curfew period, the government launched a crackdown on opposition leaders and activists, including the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Over 5,000 people were arrested so far in the ongoing crackdown mainly on opposition party activists. 

A large number of buses were seen plying on roads in the capital’s Kalabagan, Elephant Road, Banglamotor and Shahbagh areas.

Asked about the violation, Dhaka Metropolitan Police additional commissioner for traffic Md Munibur Rahman acknowledged the matter and said that the people would face charges following the curfew violation rules.

The police headquarters, in a release on July 19, said that the curfew rules violation in the DMP area would face one year’s imprisonment or financial penalty.
