The Dhaka divisional commissioner Md Sabirul Islam said on Saturday that the Narsingdi district jail would be renovated soon to make it liveable for inmates.
He made the statement after visiting the jail, where 826 inmates broke free on July 19 amidst countrywide anarchies, including the arson of government offices.
‘I visited the prison to assess the extent of the damage. Necessary measures are being taken along with suggestions to the government to repair the damage,’ he stated.
Accompanying the commissioner were additional inspector general of prisons colonel Sheikh Suzaur Rahman, Rapid Action Battalion 11 commanding officer lieutenant colonel Tanvir Bashar and Narsingdi deputy commissioner Badiul Alam.
The jailbreak occurred at about 4:00pm on July 19 during a frenzied demonstration in front of the jail, located along the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.
The inmates set fire to the jail, broke the main entrance, and escaped in large numbers.
The curfew in Narsingdi was lifted from 8:00am to 5:00pm on Saturday, leading to a return to normalcy. Increased public activity and the movement of public transport were observed at various points in the district throughout the day.
