Maria Akhter, wife of Gono Odhikar Parishad president and former vice-president of Dhaka University Central Students Union Nurul Haque Nur, alleged on Saturday that her husband was seriously tortured physically by the law enforcers during five-day remand.

She also said that Nur was too weak to walk.


Speaking at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity, Maria said that Nur was picked up by the law enforcers and some officers in plain clothes early Saturday from their Dhaka residence.

They also arrested his brother and took away all the mobile phones from the house during the raid, Maria said.

Maria alleged that during the remand Nur was seriously tortured and that was visible when he was produced before a lower court on Friday.

She said that Nur needed treatment.

She also called on the authorities to take steps for his treatment immediately.

Idris Hawlader, father of Nur, said that his son was a leader of a political party and led quota the movement in 2018.

Later, Nur was elected VP to the DUCSU, Idris added.

But he was not involved in the ongoing quota movement nor involved in any vandalism in the name of student movements, Idris Hawlader said.聽

Two minor children of Nur were present at the press conference.

Moreover, the law enforcers also picked up central leader of Gono Odhikar Parishad Abu Hanif from his Chashara residence in Narayanganj early Saturday, his sister Nilufar said at the press conference.
