Different educational institutions, including universities, across the country reopened on Tuesday after half a month amid very low attendances of students.

The authorities reopened public universities including Dhaka University, Rajshahi University and Chittagong University while no classes were held.


The students were seen returning to the halls at some universities.

Professor Alamgir Kabir has quit from the posts of Jahangirnagar University proctor and the provost of the university’s Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Hall on Tuesday allegedly escaping from charges of an alleged police action on protesting students and assisting the Awami League-backed Bangladesh Chhatra League activists to attack them.

In the capital and port city some schools and colleges were reopened but due to lack of students classes were not held at most of t hese institutions.

Some teachers and guardians said that they were not bringing their children out fearing their safety.

All government, semi-government, autonomous and semi-autonomous offices, private establishments and educational institutions reopened from Tuesday while curfew remained in force till 6:00am on the day, said a press release of Inter Services Public Relations Directorate issued on Monday night.

The announcement came hours after Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled to India amid mass uprising led by student protesters.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Dhaka University reported that the university administration on Tuesday decided to reopen the university and all halls after 20 days of its closure.

This decision was taken at an emergency syndicate meeting held virtually at 11:00am chaired by DU vice-chancellor professor ASM Maksud Kamal, said a press release issued by the university.

Decisions were also made to allow eligible students to move into the halls while services of halls of residence and academic activities, including classes and examinations, would be resumed as soon as possible, it added.

In the capital, many schools and colleges were reopened where only offices were opened and teachers came.

No classes were held at most of the educational institutions.

Udayan Higher Secondary School principal Jahura Begum said that they had reopened the school on the day while no classes were held.

‘We are hoping to restart classes from tomorrow (Wednesday) but the guardians are complaining about bringing their children in the current situation fearing their safety,’ she said.

Dhanmondi High School head teacher Mohammad Idris Mia said that they had opened the school but only one or two students came per classes.

‘We took classes but the half-yearly examinations remained suspended,’ he added.

Some students of Ideal College in the Dhanmondi area said that the office was opened but their classes would be held from today.

Teachers of University Laboratory School and College and Kakoli High School and College confirmed that they resumed offices but attendances of students were very low.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Chattogram reported that the offices of Chittagong University reopened on the day but no classes were held.

No students returned to the halls.

In the port city Chittagong Collegiate School reopened the office but no classes were held due to lack of students.

The same situation was seen at other schools.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in JU reported that offices were resumed on the day while no classes or examinations were held.

Some students returned to halls of residence on Monday night by breaking locks.

Professor Alamgir Kabir of the university, meanwhile, tendered his resignation as proctor for personal reasons.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Rajshahi reported that offices of Rajshahi University reopened on the day but no classes were held.

Some students were seen retuning to halls of residence.

Some teachers and students under the banner of ‘University Teachers Network’ brought out a silent procession and joined a rally on the campus protesting at the countrywide ongoing vandalism, looting, and sectarian attacks.

Private University Owners’ Association president Sheikh Kabir Hossain said that all private universities were scheduled to be reopened from Tuesday.

The government between July 16 and July 20 announced an indefinite closure of all primary, secondary, higher secondary and tertiary level educational institutions.
