Attorney general Md Asaduzzaman on Monday suggested reforming the High Court Division following the resignation of the chief justice and five Appellate Division judges on Sunday amid allegations of an attempted judicial coup against the interim government headed by Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus.

Responding to journalists’ queries at his office, Asaduzzaman posed a counter-question about why there would not be a public repercussion in the High Court like the one seen against the Appellate Division on Sunday.

Students and lawyers protested in court after a full court meeting of Supreme Court judges was convened by chief justice, Obaidul Hassan.

Obaidul Hassan resigned later, prompting president Mohammed Shahbuddin to appoint Syed Refaat Ahmed as the new chief justice.

Asaduzzaman said that there would be no more syndicates in the judiciary.

The attorney general said that he did not believe that law adviser Asif Nazrul would allow a syndicate in the judiciary.

‘Action will be taken if he is informed about any syndicate in the judiciary,’ he added.

Asked for comment about how the office of the attorney general would conduct cases after the resignation of most deputy attorneys general and assistant attorneys general, Asaduzzaman said that the government would solve the problem as soon as possible.
