The government has temporarily empowered its officials to perform the duties of mayors of the city corporations and municipalities and chairmen of upazila parishads and zila parishad in the absence of the public representatives in the wake of the fall of the Awami League government.
Activities of the most local government bodies came to a halt as most of the elected representatives as they belonged to the Awami League went into hiding after Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled to India amid a student-led uprising on August 5.
In separate notices, signed by Local Government Division secretary Abu Hena Morshed Zaman on Wednesday, it was announced that the civil servants concerned would perform the full financial and administrative duties until further order.
According to the order, chief executive officers of city corporations will perform the duties of a city mayor, district commissioners to perform the duties of zila parishad chairmen, executive officers of municipalities to perform those of mayors and upazila nirbahi officers to perform those of parishad chairman.
The government issued the notices as the absence of mayors, panel mayors and upazila and zila parishad chairmen disrupted various public services.
The country鈥檚 administrative system has 12 city corporations, 320 municipalities, 64 zila parishads and 492 upazila parishads.
