The University Teacher’s Network on Monday recommended brining about changes in the recruitment process of teachers, the syllabuses and the administrations of both public and private universities.

They made the recommendations in a written statement presented at a seminar titled ‘How do we want the university to be?’ at the Professor Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury auditorium of the social science building at the Dhaka University.

Addressing the seminar, former Jahangirnagar University professor Anu Muhammad said, ‘Student politics does not mean terror politics. When Awami League is in power, Chhatra League becomes terrorist,’ adding that it depend a lot on how the state sees the universities.

Syed Nizar, JU associate professor of philosophy, said that an important topic now was the depoliticisation of universities. ‘Depoliticisation is something that stops you from expressing your opinion,’ he said, adding that it was earlier introduced by dictators and colonial rulers.

The seminar was attended by Dhaka University Professor of Mass Communication and Journalism Gitiara Nasreen, physics department professor Kamrul Hasan Mamun, Bangla department professor Mohammad Azam, sociology professor Samina Luthfa of DU, along with teachers and students from different universities.
