The people in bordering areas of Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar district had to pass sleepless night after midnight past Wednesday as panic gripped them due to sounds of gunshots and bomb explosions in Myanmar territory.

After silence for a long period, explosions could be heard at the night in Sadar, Waikong Unchiprang, Sabrang Shahpari Island and St Martin’s Island of the upazila, locals said.

Rafiq Ullah of Hnila area under the upazila said that everyone in his house woke up as they could hear the sounds of continuous explosions from 1:30am on Thursday.

‘None of my family could sleep till Thursday morning,’ he said.

Shakil Hossain of St Martin’s Island’s Dakshinpara area said that they could hear the sounds of explosions in the midnight.  ‘After a long time, the sounds of explosions were heard from St Martin’s Island.’

Sabarang Union Parishad  chairman Nur Hossain said that the sounds of explosions were heard for several hours since midnight past Wednesday. ‘No such sound could be heard from morning to evening on Thursday.’

He assumed that that several bordering villages in Myanmar, including Kadirbil and Mongnipara in Maungdaw township of Myanmar, were attacked.

On August 14, a total of 13 members of the Border Guard Police fled conflict in Myanmar and took refuge in Bangladesh to save their lives from the attacks of Arakan Army.
