
The Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday summoned former chief whip of Jatiya Sangsad Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury and four others over allegations of amassing illegal assets through corruption and abuse of power.
ACC sent notices to five former lawmakers asking to appear in person at the commission’s Segun Bagicha headquarters for interrogation over graft charges, said ACC officials.
The four others are former Awami League government’s food minister Qamrul Islam, former state minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Kujendra Lal Tripura, and two former AL lawmakers Ziaur Rahman and Qashim Uddin Ahmed.
Besides, ACC on Tuesday also decided to conduct enquiries against three people, including two former lawmakers, over allegations of corruption.
They are former lawmakers AM Naimur Rahman Durjoy of Manikganj-1 constituency, Enamul Haque of Rajshahi-4, and former health minister Mohammed Nasim’s son Tomal Mansur.
ACC secretary Khorsheda Yasmeen told journalists that the commission took a decision for inquiry against them after it found graft allegations against them were primarily true.
According to the allegations, Enamul Haque appointed staff at primary school in exchange for bribes, and the intelligence unit found assets worth Tk 23,50,96,437 of him and his family members, including agricultural and non-agricultural land in Rajshahi, Dhaka, and Gazipur.
Apart from this, ACC also found information of a huge amount of illegal wealth of Enamul abroad.
Naimur Rahman Durjoy illegally grabbed and embezzled the land of BIWTA near Aricha Naval Terminal through corruption and abuse of power. He also amassed crores of money by illegally dredging the river and lifting sand by forming a syndicate comprising his relatives, according to the allegations.
Durjoy owned wealth worth Tk 3.16 crore, including 12 bigha land in Baikanthapur under Ghior in Manikganj, a one-storey house in Manikganj town, and investments in various banks and businesses, it said.
ACC decided to open an inquiry as the commission found information of a huge amount of illegal wealth of Durjoy at home and abroad by the intelligence investigation, said ACC secretary.
Tamal Mansur has been accused of misappropriating government money by supplying poor quality goods through government procurement worth Tk 175 crores to Shaheed Taj Uddin Medical College and Hospital in Gazipur through various corruptions.
He has a real estate business in Jamaica, New York, in the United States of America and purchased 12 apartments and four parking spaces at the ‘Aftab Sky View Condominium’ tower in Jamaica, New York, worth Tk 59 crore.
