Incessant rain on Thursday caused sufferings to people in Dhaka and elsewhere across the country and inundated 34 villages along the River Padma at Daulatpur in Kushtia.

In the capital, low-income people, including day-labourers, were the worst affected as many of them had to stay at home due to the incessant rain.


The rains, triggered by a low pressure over the west-central Bay and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, started on Wednesday night and continued through Thursday evening, inundating lanes in various areas, including Jurain, Green Road, Malibagh and Mouchak.聽

Office and school goers suffered a lot both in the morning as well in the evening while many had to struggle to reach their destination for lack of transports as well as traffic tailbacks.

Businesses on open spaces and pavements were also badly affected throughout the day amid the inclement weather, which is likely to continue today.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department recorded 79mm rainfall in Dhaka city in 24 hours until 6:00pm while other parts of the country, including Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Chattogram, Khulna and Barishal divisions, witnessed light to heavy rainfalls.聽

The country鈥檚 highest 157mm rainfall was recorded at Saidpur in Rangpur Sayedpur in 24 hours till 6:00pm Thursday.

The Met Office forecast light to moderate rain/thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at places in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and at a few places in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions with moderately heavy to heavy rainfalls at places in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions today.聽

Rain likely to decrease in Dhaka city today, said the Met Office meteorologist Khandokar Hafizur Rahman.聽聽

Meanwhile, residents of 34 villages at Daulatpur in Kushjtia were stranded as the villages were inundated due to heavy rain, United News of Bangladesh reported.

Crops, including pulse, chili, banana and other vegetables, planted on several hectares of lands along the river were damaged badly.

Daulatpur upazila agricultural official Nurul Islam said that vigna mungo (mashkolai) planted in 1,620 hectares of lands at Maricha, Philipnagar, Chilmari and Ramkrisna unions was damaged.

According to the Water Development Board, water level at the Hardinge Bridge Point of the Padma River surged by two centimeter in the last 21 hours till 9:00am on Thursday but it continued flowing below the danger level.

Besides, the extent to damages of chili, banana and other vegetables planted on 70, 73 and 13 hectares of lands were yet to be determined, he said.

Pabna鈥檚 Water Development Board executive engineer Rezaul Karim said that there was no concern of surge of water level in the river from Thursday and the water would start falling after remaining stable for next one to two days.聽

Low-lying areas of the Padma River in Rajshahi division were also inundated on Thursday due to heavy rain for the past two days and an onrush of upstream water, 抖阴精品 staff correspondent in Rajshahi reported.

In Rajshahi, about 160mm rain was recorded in the past 48 hours ending at 6:00am on Thursday.

Due to the incessant rains, at least 7.000 hectares of farmlands in Rajshahi, Natore, and Chapainawabganj districts were submerged while over seven thousands families in Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj districts were stranded, according to the officials.
