A Dhaka court on Saturday remanded another accused of murder of Tanjeel Jahan Islam Tamim in police custody for four days for interrogation.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Saiful Islam passed the order as the police produced the accused, Md Rasel, before the court and seeking him in custody, Bangladesh Sangbad Sanstha reported.

Earlier on October 11, a Dhaka court remanded five accused Md Abdul Latif, Md Qurban Ali, Mahin, Mozammel Haque Kabir and Badhon incustody for four days for interrogation in the case filed with the Hatirjheel police station.

Tamim’s family demanded justice and quick arrest of the people involved in the murder at a human chain in front of the National Press Club in the capital on the day.

Tamim’s father Sultan Ahmed told the human chain that the country recently had witnessed a new independence amid a mass uprising on August 5.

‘But what kind of independence people are talking about where you don’t have security at your own house,’ Sultan asked.

Md Rasel was arrested on Saturday for the murder of Tamim, who was beaten to death over a flat-ownership dispute at Rampura Mahanagar Project in the capital at about 5:00am on Thursday.

Earlier, the police arrested four suspects at the spot on Thursday and another Malibagh on Friday.

Hatirjheel police station inspector for investigation Mohammad Golam Azam said that Rasel directly participated in the murder and he was identified after analysing CCTV footage.

He also said that an operation was underway to arrest Pleasant Properties managing director Shaikh Rabiul Alam, also a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party executive committee, for his alleged involvement in the murder.

The BNP, meanwhile, issued a show-cause notice on Shaikh Rabiul Alam on Friday on allegations of his involvement in the murder.

The notice said that the organisation’s discipline and image were damaged due to allegations of his involvement in the murder,

The notice, signed by BNP senior joint-secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, asked Rabiul to explain in writing to the party central office in 24 hours why disciplinary action would not be taken against him.

Tamim, 32, succumbed to injuries he sustained in a violent altercation at an under-construction building at Mahanagar Project with employees of the real estate developer, Pleasant Properties, and owners of other flats of the building on Thursday, according to the police.

Tamim’s father Sultan Mahmud, one of the land owners alleged that the killing took place after an altercation over the distribution of flats in the nine-storey building, built on land owned by three individuals.

He said that each landowner was entitled to five flats, but Pleasant Properties had been delaying the transfer of his share despite handing over the flats of the two other owners.

Sultan Ahmed filed a case against 16 people, including Rabiul and Narcotics Control Department officer Md Mamun on Friday.
