The Anti-Corruption Commission on Wednesday filed two cases against former Samabaya Bank chairman Mohiuddin Ahmed and his wife Nurjahan Begum for amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 3.89 crore.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court, on the other hand, issued an international travel ban on three former lawmakers of the Awami League and their family members for their alleged involvement in corruption.


ACC director general (prevention) Md Akhtar Hossain said that the commission’s deputy director Jahangir Alam filed the two cases against Mohiuddin and his wife Nurjahan with its integrated district office in Dhaka -1.

One of the two cases was filed against Mohiuddin Ahmed allegedly for amassing wealth worth Tk 2.70 crore beyond known sources of income.

Mohiuddin, in his wealth statement submitted to the ACC, declared that his movable and immovable assets amounted to Tk 3.97 crore.

After scrutinising the information, ACC inquiry officers found evidence of his illegal assets worth Tk 2.70 crore.

The second case stated that Nurjahan Begum, in her wealth statement submitted to the ACC, showed that her wealth amounted to Tk 1.33 crore.

After scrutinising her wealth, the commission found that Nurjahan concealed information about wealth worth Tk 14.70 lakh while she amassed Tk 1.19 crore beyond her known source of income.

Earlier, on February 16, 2021, a case was filed against nine people including Mohiuddin on charges of embezzlement of customers’ gold worth Tk 11 crore, but his name was dropped from the charge sheet.

Meanwhile, Dhaka metropolitan senior special judge Mohammed As shams Joglul Hossain issued international travel bans on former AL lawmaker for Jashore-6 constituency, Shaheen Chaklader, his wife Farhana Jahan Mala, daughters Samiha Jahan Antora and Maisha Jahan Ahona, and son Zabeer Chaklader.

The court also issued a travel ban on former lawmaker for Gaibandha-4 constituency Abul Kalam Azad, his wife Mst Ruhul Ara Rahim, former lawmaker for Borguna 2 constituency Showkat Hasanur Rahman, and his wife Rownak Rahman over graft allegations.

ACC public prosecutor Mahmud Hossain Jahangir said that the court issued the travel bans in response to separate petitions submitted by the ACC.

Earlier, the ACC decided to carry out inquiries against the three former lawmakers and their family members over allegations of amassing illegal wealth at home and abroad.
