Environmental activists in coastal town Kuakata of Patuakhali district organised a rally on Saturday, campaigning against lead pollution.
In collaboration with the UNICEF, Youth Net Global and Pure Earth Bangladesh organised the programme to mark the international lead pollution prevention week during October 20-26, 2024.
Participants, including teachers, students, and activists from various social and cultural organisations, gathered in front of the Kuakata Press Club and marched to the beach, where they formed a human chain to raise awareness about lead contamination.
Speaking at the rally, Zahidul Islam, district coordinator of Youth Net Global, highlighted the dangers of lead pollution, particularly for children and pregnant women.
Studies estimate that approximately 36 million children, or 60 per cent of Bangladeshi youths, are affected by lead poisoning.
Placing their five-point demand, the participants called for immediate action in this regard.
They also urged stricter regulations on lead in consumer products, safe recycling practices for lead-acid batteries, and improved public awareness.
