Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury will head a six-member search committee to recommend people for the offices of the chief election commissioner and four other election commissioners.

Chief justice Syed Refaat Ahmed on Tuesday nominated the Appellate Division judge for the search committee as the government initiated a move to constitute the Election Commission.

The chief justice also nominated Justice AKM Asaduzzaman, a High Court judge, as a member of the search committee, sources in the Supreme Court and the law ministry said.

The search committee is likely to include former Dhaka University professor CR Abrar and former Public Service Commission chair Zinnatunnesa Tahmina Begum as the two distinguished citizens nominated by the president.

According to the law, the chief justice designated an Appellate Division judge to serve as the committee chairman, while the High Court judge will serve a member of the committee.

The rest two members of the search committee are the comptroller and auditor general of Bangladesh and Public Service Commission chairman.

According to the law, the search committee will recommend two people for each of the offices of the chief election commissioner and the four election commissioners and the president will made the appointments from amongst the list.

Earlier in the day, law adviser Asif Nazrul informed reporters that a search committee was established to reconstitute the Election Commission.

‘The recommended committee has been submitted to the chief adviser for signature, and an official notification is expected in a day or two,’ he stated.

The Election Commission remained vacant since Kazi Habibul Awal as the chief election commissioner, along with Ahsan Habib Khan, Rashida Sultana, Md Alamgir, and Anisur Rahman as election commissioners, submitted their resignations to the president on September 5.

Their resignation followed the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime on August 5 amid a mass uprising led by students. The president dissolved the 12th parliament on August 6, which had been elected in a one-sided January 7 election administered by the Awal-led Election Commission.
