Government agencies so far seized 12,696 kilogrammes of polythene and fined errant traders Tk 6 lakh since the government started drives against illegal polythene, harmful to the environment, on November 1, said a press release on Saturday.

Tapan Kumar Biswas, head of the monitoring team for drives against polythene, shared the information warning that strict action would be taken if polythene is found in future inspections.


The additional secretary of the environment, forest and climate change ministry shared the information while conducting regular market inspections on Saturday at Banani kitchen market, Banani DCC market, Cherry Shopping Complex, and Shwapno Super Shop.

Joint secretary Mohammad Rezaul Karim, deputy secretary Rubina Ferdousi, and other committee members were with him, among others, during the market monitoring.

They distributed leaflets to the public, encouraging the use of jute and cloth bags as alternatives to polythene.

At least 67 mobile courts have been conducted, and the courts fined 142 shops and establishments Tk 6,13,700, and seized a total of 12.696 tonnes of illegal polythene.

One illegal polythene manufacturing factory has also been sealed, the press release said quoting Tapan Kumar, adding that such drives will continue.
