Workers of Beximco Industrial Park in Gazipur continued blocking the Chandra-Nabinagar road at Chakraborty for the second consecutive day on Sunday, demanding payment of their arrears from October.

The readymade garment workers blocked the road at about 9:00am and continued the blockade until filing of this report at 7:45pm.

Kashimpur police station officer-in-charge Md Saiful Islam said that around 41,000 workers were employed in various factories in the Beximco Industrial Park, owned by former Awami League lawmaker Salman F Rahman.

‘At least Tk 80 crore is required for monthly salaries, which the authorities failed to arrange, leading to the unrest. The police and administration are in discussions with the workers and the authorities to resolve the issue,’ he added.

The workers blocked the road for 11 hours on Saturday, starting at 8:00am, after previously blocking it on Thursday and postponed their protest on Friday due to the industrial park’s weekly closure.

The vehicular movement on both sides of the road, meanwhile, came to a halt due to the blockade creating huge gridlocks and causing sufferings to commuters.

Long-distance transports were seen using alternative routes, while short-distance vehicles remained stranded for hours.Â
