At least 475 people were killed and 815 others were injured in 452 road accidents across the country in October, said a report published by the Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh on Saturday.

During the time, 34.31 per cent or 163 people were killed and 29.32 per cent or 239 people were injured in 30.53 per cent or 138 motorcycle related crashes.


During the period, 76 people were killed and 24 others were injured in 63 railways accidents while 24 people were killed, 36 were injured and nine remained missing in 19 accidents on waterways.

The PWAB launched the monthly report based on media reports on Saturday, according to a press release.

Among the fatal victims, the highest 156 people were transport workers, including drivers, followed by 117 pedestrians, 49 students, 16 political leaders and activists and 15 teachers.

Fifty-one children became fatal road crash victims in October.

Of the crashes, the highest 49.48 per cent crashes were caused by crushing or hitting pedestrians or other vehicles followed by 25.25 per cent by head-on collisions, 14.77 per cent by losing control and then fell into roadside ditches, 9.51 per cent by other reasons, 0.25 per cent by collision with trains and other road transports and 0.75 per cent by tangling scarves with wheels.

The highest percentage, 38.29 per cent, of road crashes took place on national highways followed by 30.39 per cent on the regional highways and 24.62 per cent on the feeder roads.

In Dhaka metropolitan city, 4.56 per cent road crashes occurred while the percentage was 1.86 per cent in Chattogram metropolitan city and 0.25 per cent on level crossings.

The association blamed the absence of the traffic and highway police on the roads and highways, violation of laws, the absence of road marking and signs, dilapidated roads and long working hours of drivers for the road accidents.

The report urged the government to stop imports and registration of motorcycles and easy bikes.

It also recommended sufficient lighting on roads, separate lanes for different vehicles and implementation of the relevant laws and rules to check road crashes.聽
