Seven people, including three children, suffered burns in a fire believed to have originated from a gas explosion at a tin-shed house in Dhaka’s Mirpur area early Sunday.

The injured are undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

The injured are Abdul Khalil, 40, his wife Ruma Akter, 32, their sons Hafiz Abdullah, 13, Mohammad, 10, and Ismail, 4, as well as neighbours Mohammad Shahjahan, 25, and his wife Swapna Akter Parvin, 22.

Shaon Bin Rahman, a resident physician at the burn institute, said that three of the seven injured people were in critical condition.

‘Abdul Khalil suffered 95 per cent burns, Abdullah 38 per cent, Mohammad 35 per cent, Ruma and Ismail 20 per cent each, while Swapna sustained 14 per cent burns, and Shahjahan has 6 per cent,’ he said.

Family members said that the incident took place at about 5:00am on Sunday.

They suspected a leak in the pipeline allowed gas to accumulate in the house, leading to the explosion.

‘There might have been a leak in the pipeline. The gas accumulated overnight. Someone lit the stove which caused the explosion,’ a family member said.
