Political parties and socio-cultural organisations on Wednesday observed Dr Milon Day in Dhaka as elsewhere in the country by paying tributes to the supreme sacrifice of Shamsul Alam Khan Milon 34 years ago.

Dr Milon, the then joint secretary of the Bangladesh Medical Association, was killed by henchmen of military-junta turned politician HM Ershad near Teacher-Student Centre at Dhaka University on November 27, 1990 during the peak of an anti-autocracy movement.


The death of Milon transformed the anti-autocracy movement into a mass uprising that hastened the fall of the autocratic regime paving the way for the restoration of democracy in the country.

Different political parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal factions and other socio-cultural and professional organisations, took elaborate programmes to mark the day.

The programmes included commemorative discussions, special prayers and placing of wreaths on Milon’s grave on the campus of Dhaka Medical College and at Milon Smrity Chattar near the TSC on the DU campus.

The leaders of the BNP, the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union of 1990 and then Students Action Council placed wreaths on the grave of Milon at 8:00am and at Milon Square on the DU campus at 8:30am.

The Doctors Association of Bangladesh, the Janaswasthya Sangram Parishad, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, different professional bodies and Milon’s family members placed wreaths on his grave and said prayers there.

They also placed wreaths at the monument commemorating Milon near the TSC.

The Bangladesh Jasod held a discussion at the National Press Club to mark the day where the party president, Sharif Nurul Ambia, chaired.

Gana Forum emeritus president Dr Kamal Hossain, Revolutionary Worekrs Party general secretary Saiful Huq, Communist Party of Bangladesh general secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince, BNP central leader Zahir Uddin Swapan, Socialist Party of Bangladesh assistant general secretary Razequzzaman Ratan, Bangladesh Jasod general  secretary Nazmul Haque Prodhan  and others spoke at the discussion. 

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-Jasod held a discussion at Cononel Taher Auditorium where central leaders of the party spoke.

The Workers Party of Bangladesh also held a discussion on its Topkhana Road central office to mark the day.

The Left Democratic Alliance, the Communist Party of Bangladesh, the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-Jasod, the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD,   Ganosamhati Andolan, the Socialist Party of Bangladesh, SPB (Marxist), Revolutionary Workers Party, the Jatiya Mukti Council and the  Bangladesher Samyabadi Andolan also paid tributes to Dr Milon.
