
The 144th birth anniversary of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, a legendary political leader of the nation, was observed nationwide on Thursday, with the demand for his official recognition as a national leader.
Various political parties and socio-cultural organisations held separate programmes to honour the occasion.
To mark the day, the National Awami Party (Bhashani) organised a discussion at the Bangladesh Shishu Kalyan Parishad. The event was chaired by NAP (Bhashani) chairman Shapon Kumar Saha.
National Congress chairman Kazi Chhabbir highlighted Bhashani’s lifelong struggle for the rights of the oppressed and common people. He called for the official recognition of Maulana Bhashani as a national leader.
The Bhashani Onusari Parishad organised a programme at the Central Shaheed Minar, where leaders from various political parties placed wreaths on the portrait of Maulana Bhashani.
Among those present were Bhashani Onusari Parishad convener Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu, Bangladesh Nationalist Party central leader Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Huq, and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD general secretary Shahid Uddin Mahmud Shapon.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Tangail reported that a delegation from Maulana Bhashani Science and Technology University placed wreaths on Bhashani’s grave in the district. The Bhashani Onusari Parishad and several other organisations also paid their respects.
Maulana Bhashani was born in 1880 in Dhanpara village of Sirajganj. His father, Haji Sharafat Ali Khan, supported his formal education at a local school and madrassah. Bhashani entered politics at a young age, dedicating his life to the welfare of the common people.
He began his career as a primary schoolteacher in Kagmari, Tangail, and later worked at a madrassah in Kala village, Haluaghat, Mymensingh.
Known as the ‘Majlum Jananeta’ (leader of the downtrodden), Bhashani was renowned for his stand against imperialism and oppression by the Pakistani regime. He also served as the chairman of the All-Party Action Committee during the War of Independence.
In 1976, he led the historic Farakka Long March, advocating for Bangladesh’s rightful share of water from the Ganges River.
Bhashani was the founding president of the then Pakistan Awami Muslim League, which later became the Awami League. He also established the progressive political organisation, the National Awami Party.
The legendary leader died on November 17, 1976.
