Bangladesh interim government environment, forest and climate change adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Friday said the sound pollution control rules would be finalised this month.

‘The rules will give the police the power to control sound pollution,’ she said, adding that it was not enough just to sentence someone to prison or impose fines, but awareness should be created among the country’s people to this end.

Rizwana made the remarks while speaking as chief guest at an awareness programme on sound pollution control in front of Gulshan Society Jame Mosque in Dhaka.

She said noise pollution had an adverse impact on the physical and mental health of people and that was why everyone’s cooperation was needed to check sound pollution.

The environment adviser said, ‘Car horns should only be used when the car is in motion. Reducing the speed of vehicles will also help cut the risk of accidents.’

Special initiatives will be taken to control noise pollution in 10 areas of Dhaka, she said adding, ‘All people should be aware of sound pollution for making Dhaka city livable.’

RAJUK chairman Major General, retd, Md Siddiqur Rahman Sarker, Dhaka North City Corporation administrator Md Mahmudul Hasan, sound pollution control project director Syeda Masuma Khanam, Gulshan Society president Omar Sadat, its vice-president Syed Almas Kabir and secretary general Syed Ahsan Habib among others, were present at the programme.

Later, adviser Rizwana visited Gulshan Lake and suggested setting up a sewage treatment plant there.
