Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur vice-chancellor professor Md Showkat Ali on Sunday said that they had punished 71 students over their involvement in the killing of the university student, Abu Sayeed, following disciplinary committee recommendations.

‘We have given punishment to 71 students for different terms for going against the student movement and getting involved in the killing of Abu Sayeed,’ Showkat Ali said at a press conference after holding the 109th syndicate meeting, said a press release. 


He said that legal action was taken against 15 students as they completed their studies.

’A total of 33 students were expelled for two semesters and 23 others were expelled for a semester,’ the VC added.

He said that they had terminated nine university staff members, including teachers, officials, staff members and former proctor.

He said that student politics on the campus would be banned until issuing further notice as per the last syndicate meeting decision.

Quota reform movement leader and Begum Rokeya University student Abu Sayeed was shot dead allegedly by police during the countrywide student protests demanding the reform of the quota system in government jobs on July 16.
