Police on Thursday arrested two people including a leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in a case filed on charge of beating a businessman after tying him to a mahogany tree for extortion at Baraigram upazila in Natore.
The arrested are Baraigram municipal BNP organising secretary Abdus Sattar Khan and activist Kamal Hossain.
Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Baraigram police station, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they arrested the two accused on Thursday morning at their houses after victim businessman – Shah Alam – had filed a case with the police station against five people including Abdus Sattar Khan and Kamal Hossain on Wednesday night.
He said that the arrested were sent to jail through a court order after police had produced them before a Natore court on Thursday afternoon.
According to the case statement, Abdus Sattar and his four associates blocked Shah Alam’s path at around 10:30pm on Tuesday over a previous enmity and demanded Tk 8 lakh extortion from him.
When Alam refused to pay the money, Abdus Sattar and his associates took him to a nearby mahogany orchard near Abdus Sattar Khan’s house, tied him to a tree, and beat him, the statement said.
A passer-by witnessed the incident and informed the police, who rushed to the spot, rescued and admitted Alam to the hospital, the statement adds.
Contacted, Ishaq Ali, president of the Baraigram municipal BNP, claimed that Abdus Sattar was accused in the case in a planned way.
‘Shah Alam owes Sattar’s nephew Kamal Hossain Tk 86,000. Arbitration had recently been arranged to settle the matter. As Abdus Sattar was present in the arbitration, he was implicated in a false case,’ he alleged.
