A case was filed early Friday following the killing of sub-inspector Md Shafiqul Islam, 43, who was hacked to death by miscreants in Netrakona’s Durgapur upazila Thursday evening.
Shafiqul, a resident of the Bagichapara area in Durgapur, served as an SI in the radio department of Jamalpur Police Lines.
Durgapur police station officer-in-charge Bachchu Mia stated that the victim’s father filed the case at about 12:00am Friday.
Police have collected two CCTV footages from the scene, revealing three of the five to six attackers involved in the incident.
‘The video footages show the attackers brutally hacking Shafiqul several times,’ said OC Bachchu Mia.
Special drives are underway to apprehend the culprits, with three police teams actively investigating the case. However, the motive behind the attack remains unclear.
‘We cannot confirm whether the attack was due to previous enmity. The motive will be uncovered through investigation,’ added the police official.
Shafiqul had returned to Durgapur from Jamalpur on vacation on Thursday. At around 6:30pm, a group of miscreants attacked him with sharp weapons in Ukilpara while he was heading to a local market.
Hearing his screams, locals rushed to the scene and took him to Durgapur upazila health complex. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Family members reported that Shafiqul had no known disputes or enemies and were unable to determine why he was targeted, police said.
