Police have found that 1,234 incidents on the religious minorities were political in nature against a Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council claim that there were 2,010 incidents on the lives, properties and places of worship of the minorities from August 4 to August 20.

Referring to a police report, the chief adviser’s press wing in a statement on Saturday also said that a least 161 incidents claimed by the Council were found false or untrue and 20 incidents were communal as claimed.

The CA office issued the statement against the Council’s data disclosed on September 19 where it alleged that 1,769 communal attacks and acts of vandalism took place against the minorities in Bangladesh and a total of 2,010 incidents on lives, properties and worships of the minorities happened in the period.

The CA office claimed that Bangladesh police had collected the list of allegations prepared by the Council and communicated with the persons and authorities claimed to have been the targets of the violence.

‘Police have also visited all and every place, establishment, and person mentioned in the report of the Council.  All aggrieved persons have been requested to lodge complaints with police. Proper security of the aggrieved people has been ensured. Regular cases, general diaries and other appropriate lawful measures have been taken according to the findings of the investigations,’ the release said.

Asked about the CA office statement, Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council general secretary Manindra Kumar Nath said that they did not made any false claim as the number was given through the organisation.

‘The CA office statement said that cases were political in nature. But, it did not explain it. You cannot torture any minority people for their political beliefs,’ Manindra told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

He said that they would issue a statement later from the Council in this regard.

Of the 1,769 allegations of communal attacks and vandalism, police have so far registered 62 cases on merit of the claims, the CA office’s statement mentioned, adding that at least 35 people have been arrested based on the findings of the investigations.

It said that police found that in the majority of the cases, the attacks were not communally motivated — rather, those were political in nature.

According to the claims by the Council, 1,452 incidents — or 82.8 per cent of the total claims — took place on August 5, 2024 when Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power.

At least 65 incidents took place on August 4 and 70 incidents on August 6, according to the Council — a copy of which has been obtained by police, the statement said.

‘Apart from the Council claims, police have also received 134 allegations of communal violence from August 5, 2024 to January 8, 2025. Police responded to all those complaints with utmost importance. At least 53 cases have been filed over those complaints. A total of 65 offenders have been arrested in these cases,’ it added.

In all, since August 4, a total of 115 cases have been registered over complaints of communal attacks.

And at least 100 people have been arrested in the cases, the CA office said.

The interim government has a zero-tolerance policy towards any communal attacks in the country and police have been ordered to arrest the culprits, according to the statement.

The government has also announced that it would compensate the victims.

Police have attached the highest importance to addressing all the allegations, the CA office added.
