The High Court on Monday directed the authorities concerned to submit a list of courts across the country which still has iron cages within the next four weeks.
A High Court division bench, comprising justices Farah Mahbub and Debasish Roy Chowdhury, passed the order.
The High Court said that any civilised society by any law didn鈥檛 support iron cages as it was a violation of human rights.
Mohammad Shishir Monir argued for the petitioner in the court, while deputy attorney general Md Tanmi Khan appeared for the state.
The state informed the High Court that iron cages had already been removed from some courts.
Ten lawyers of the Supreme Court have filed the petition for removal of iron cages in the lower courtrooms.
The lawyers are GM Mujahidur Rahman, Mohammad Noab Ali, Saddam Hossain, Abdullah Sadik, Mizanul Haque, Mujahidul Islam, Mesbah Uddin, Md Jobaidul Islam, Azim Uddin Patwari, and Sajjad Sarwar.
After hearing the petition, the High Court has issued a rule directing the authorities concerned to submit the list of courtrooms having iron cases across the country.
The High Court, in its rule, has asked to explain why an order shall not be announced to reinstate accused box instead of iron case.
Furthermore, the rule has also asked to know why installation of iron case shall not be conflicting with the articles 31, 32 and 35 of the constitution.
