Dhaka University unit of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, on Wednesday demanded an elected student representative for the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union president post instead of the ex-officio vice-chancellor.
The wing raised the demand for keeping balance of powers, said the DU unit JCD leaders at a press conference at Teacher-Student Centre after submitting the wing’s proposals on DUCSU constitution reforms to the university registrar.
Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahosh, president of the DU unit JCD, said, ‘It has been proposed that the president of the DUCSU should be directly elected from the students.’
Additionally, the formation of an ‘advisory council’ comprising faculty members, administrators, alumni and students has been suggested to balance powers of the president, said Sahosh.
The DU administration formed a special committee in December to review the DUCSU constitution and to address the student demands.
