A group of CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers on Monday blocked the Banani road bringing traffic to a standstill in the capital’s Mohakhali area, causing immense suffering to the commuters in the city.

The protesters began their demonstration at about 12:00pm and they left the road at about 2:00pm, said Wahid Hasan, a sub-inspector of the Banani police station.

Due to the protest, traffic was disrupted in Gulshan, Banani and Mohakhali areas, leaving passengers stuck on the road for more than an hour.

Protesters gathered in front of the Mohakhali’s Bangladesh Road Transport Authority building under the banner of ‘CNG Auto Rickshaw Drivers Oikya Parishad.’

They blocked the road with their various demands, including the immediate implementation of a daily deposit of Tk 900 for CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers.

Despite the government order, some of the owners charge over Tk 1,000 as daily deposit, a protester alleged.

‘We have to face harassment by owners, passengers and police. The situation has forced us to take to the streets to protest at the harassment,’ the protester added.

According to the government rule, the drivers have to pay Tk 900 to the owners against each auto daily. Bangladesh Road Transport Authority chairman Mohammed Yasin told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that he had a meeting with the protesters in the afternoon with their main demand which was to implement the daily deposit of Tk 900 for the drivers.

‘If any owner asks more than Tk 900 daily deposit from any drivers, they can file complaints with us. We will make sure necessary steps against the accused owners are taken,’ he said.

Their demands also included stopping of police harassment, fines and cases in the name of meter fault and illegal parking, and registration in drivers’ names for 5,000 CNG-run auto-rickshaws approved by the government for Dhaka city in 2007.
