A Chattogram court on Thursday granted a doctor two-day remand in connection with a sedition case filed over the alleged desecration of the national flag in the city鈥檚 New Market area in the past year.

Chattogram鈥檚 additional chief metropolitan magistrate Sarker Hasan Shahriar approved the remand, said Md Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury, assistant public prosecutor of the Chattogram metropolitan sessions judge鈥檚 court.聽


The arrested, Dr Kathak Das, 40, is an ophthalmologist at the Lions Charitable Eye Hospital and Bangladesh Eye Hospital in Chattogram,

Kathak Das is a named accused among the 19 people, including Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote, in a sedition case filed with the Kotwali police station on charges of desecrating the national flag in the past year, Raihanul Wazed said.聽

The immigration police arrested him at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Wednesday. He was attempting to leave for the United Kingdom, said Abdul Karim, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station, adding that he was later handed over to Kotwali police in Chattogram.

The police produced him before the CMM court and sought a 10-day remand, but the court granted two days and ordered him to jail.聽

On November 30, 2024, a Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader in Chattogram, Firoz, filed the case with the Kotwali police.
