The government employees belonging to the grade 11 to grade 20 at a grand rally on Friday gave an ultimatum saying that they would begin a work abstention on March 1 across the country if their demands, including the formation of a pay commission to implement the ninth pay scale, were not met.

They issued the ultimatum at the rally, organised under the banner of Sarkari Karmachari Dabi Aday Oikya Parishad, at central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka city.

After the rally, the employees proceeded to Chief Adviser’s Office to submit a memorandum with their demands, but they were blocked by the police at Shahbagh and prevented from going further.

‘At around 1:30pm, while we were protesting at Shahbagh, the police used water cannons to disperse us,’ said Lutfor Rahman, coordinator of the parishad.

He told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the highest salary for employees in the 11th-20th grade is Tk 12,500, while the lowest is Tk 8,250, which makes it difficult to run a family given the high prices of essential commodities.

‘The current pay scale was implemented in 2015. Although the government is supposed to implement a new pay scale every five years, it has not done so showing many excuses,’ he said.

Their other demands included implementing an interim 50 per cent dearness allowance from January 2025 until the 9th pay scale is implemented, ensuring regular annual salary increments for employees promoted to the last step on the basic salary scale, establishing a uniform recruitment policy to eliminate discrimination among employees, reinstating the selection grade, and abolishing the outsourcing process for employee recruitment.
