Dhoriti Rokhhay Amra, a group of civil society leaders working on environmental challenges, on Saturday urged the government to cancel its decision to construct a road through Osmani Udyan.

DHORA leaders in a press release issued on the day also said that this plan would make a severe negative impact on the environment by cutting down the trees and destroying the park.

Earlier, reports were published in different news media that the government had taken a decision to construct a road through Osmani Udyan for connecting Fulbaria鈥檚 Phoenix Road to Abdul Gani Road in the capital by cutting down several trees.

The release said that if the government constructed any road through the 24-acre park by neglecting the opinions of the urban planners and the environmentalists then it would put an adverse effect on the environment of Dhaka.

Osmani Udyan is one of the main sources of supplying oxygen in the capital, which had been kept closed for the past seven years in the name of the development project, it continued.聽

According to the organisation, in Dhaka out of 265 parks only 42 are surviving barely.

In the release, the environmentalists said that decisions were also taken earlier to destroy the important green areas in the city.

They mentioned that the environmental balance in Dhaka was damaged severely by cutting down trees in many areas including at Anowara Udyan, Hatirjheel and Panthakunja Park in the name of development.

These decisions put Dhaka in more risks of dust, pollution and unliveable conditions.

Mentioning media reports, the release read that the decision of cutting down trees at Osmani Udyan was not in the main design of the udyan.聽聽

DHORA leaders observed that the government decision to construct a 20-storey parking lot in the Fulbaria area and a connecting road would be disastrous from the environmental and urban management point of view.

They urged the government to cancel its new decision considering the environment and public health, cancel its all previous development projects regarding all parks in Dhaka, proper action against the people behind these projects and take planned and sustainable initiatives to preserve the green and environment in the city.
