A former member of the Dhaka University unit of the Islami Chhatra Shibir has filed a case against 26 people, including then proctor, a hall provost and Bangladesh Chhatra League activists on charge of torturing him in 2017.

Mohammad Nazmul Bashar, a former Dhaka University student and former secretariat member of DU Shibir, filed the case with the Shahbagh police station.


According to the allegations, Bashar’s hands and legs were bound while he was beaten with rods and stumps. His hands were broken in the torture while attempts were made to pull out his fingernails. 

In the complaint, he stated, ‘When my body became lifeless, the accused assumed I was dead and left me at the hall gate at approximately 12:30am.’

He said, ‘Despite being aware of the torture inside the hall, then provost Mofizur Rhaman and proctor Mohammad Amjad Ali took no initiative to rescue me.’

The individuals named in the case include Barikul Islam Badhan, Sajib Hossain, Sanaullah Surjo, Abu Jafar Sohag, Sabuj Reza, Rakib Hasan, Nahid Ukil Jewel, Muntasir Billah, Al Amin, Shakil, Asif Alam, Raiyan Kamal, Abdul Kader, Mridha Md. Zahidul Islam, Mahmudul Hasan Palash, Al Amin, Ariful Islam, Sheikh Jami, Irfan Chowdhury, Tanvir Ahmed Shaon, Musa, Faisal, Robiul, Asif, Tushar, and Hasan. The accused are members of Chhatra League’s Bangabandhu Hall unit and the central committee.

Former hall provost and professor of mass communication and journalism Mofizur Rahman along with then proctor AM Amjad have also been named in the case.

Mofizur Rhaman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Sunday, ‘This was a very unfortunate incident, I am deeply saddened to hear this. I was not aware of the incident at that time. Had I known, I would have taken immediate action.’

Mohammad Amjad Ali said, that he was also not aware of the incident and had he known about it, he would have taken action.

‘What is being said against me is not true. He was involved in Shibir’s politics. I don’t know if he is making such comments to gain a position in an upcoming committee,’ he said.
