A group of students linked to the Students’ Against Discrimination blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi-Rangpur highway, protesting at not being included in the newly formed Sirajganj district committee of the platform, in Sirajganj on Monday.

On Saturday, a 284-member committee was approved with Sajib Sarker as convener of the platform in the district.

The following day, one of the coordinators of the movement, Muntasir Mehedi Hasan, held a press conference, demanding the cancellation of the committee.

He accused the committee of including leaders and activists from the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the Awami League, while excluding several individuals who had played an active role in the student-led July-August mass uprising.

At a press conference at the Sirajganj Press Club auditorium on Monday, convener Sajib said that the district convening committee, comprising nine upazilas and thanas, was formed for six months to establish committees at the upazila, thana, educational institution, union and ward levels.

He also said that activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Jamaat-e-Islami-backed Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir were excluded from the committee.
