At least nine people were killed in road accidents in Pirojpur, Dhaka and Feni on Monday.

United News of Bangladesh reported that five people were killed and 10 others injured in a collision between a pickup van and a covered van on Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Feni on Monday.


The accident occurred in Hafezia madrassah area at about 7:00pm on Monday, leaving five people dead on the spot and 10 others injured, the police said, adding that the identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Some 14 to 15 construction workers boarding the pickup van were going to Dhaka from Chattogram as the speeding covered van crashed into the pickup van from the opposite direction, resulting in the casualties.

In Dhaka, a couple was killed and their daughter was injured after a pickup van hit them while they were crossing the road in Jatrabari, said Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan Irfan, sub-inspector of Jatrabari police station.

The deceased were identified as Abdul Jabbar, 52, and his wife Ruma Khanam, 40.

Their daughter Jui Akhter, 14, was injured and undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

A speeding pickup van hit them while crossing the road in the morning, leaving Runa died on the spot while Jabbar was taken to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The UNB also reported that a man and his son died as a bus hit a van on Nazirpur-Matibhanga road in Nazirpur of Pirojpur.

‘The deceased were Mahabub Mollah, 35, and his son Iyad Ali Mollah, hailing from Chaltabari village of the upazila. Van driver Moin Sheikh, who was also injured, was taken to Khulna Medical College and Hospital,’ said Mahamud Al Farid Bhuiya, officer-in-charge of Nazirpur police station.

Meanwhile, at least 20 people were injured in a collision among five vehicles that occurred at about 7:00am on Dhaka-Mawa Expressway near Kamarkhola area in Munshiganj, the UNB reported.
